Home Game Broncos boss makes call on coach's future

Broncos boss makes call on coach’s future

Embattled Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold won’t be sacked despite a dismal six-game losing streak, Broncos chief executive Paul White said on Sunday.

White took the remarkable step of organising a press conference the morning after Brisbane lost to the Warriors, a defeat that left some players in tears.

“Today is about reaffirming my support for the coach,” White told reporters, insisting that it was too soon to make a dramatic call on Seibold, who is in the second season of a five-year contract.

“The reaction you saw from the players last night shows just how much they’re hurting.

“We will stay the course. We will keep providing the necessary support but we are acutely aware of the position we are in.

“We know we are up against it. I want to reinforce our support for the coach, the coaching staff and the playing group.

“We are six weeks in to the restart of the game. I know we have lost six games but we started the season with two wins.

“Now’s the time to reinforce that we’re supporting our playing group and our coach to hopefully help them to turn this season around for us.

“He’s a good coach, he’s going through a tough time at the moment. Many other coaches – some who’ve coached at this club as well, Wayne [Bennett] included – have gone through tough periods in their career.

“We’ve sustained periods where we’ve lost eight in a row and the club stayed the course and we’ve been rewarded on the other side for it. That’s what we intend to do now.”

The Broncos are 14th in the NRL with their 2-6 record, leading only the Titans and Bulldogs.

Brisbane great Steve Renouf said after the Warriors defeat that he believed Seibold had lost the dressing room and was on borrowed time.
