Collingwood star’s season in doubt as surgery confirmed

Collingwood star Jeremy Howe is in doubt of making a return to the AFL season after suffering a serious knee injury in the Magpies’ loss to Greater Western Sydney.

On Monday, the club confirmed the defender would undergo surgery this week to repair the posterior cruciate and medial ligament damage sustained in his gruesome Collison with Giants midfielder Jacob Hopper last Friday.

The decision casts doubt over a return the regular season for Howe with only 12 weeks left of fixtures to be played.

Collingwood football boss Geoff Walsh was reluctant to put a date on a possible return for his star defender, but said it would be a “matter of months rather than weeks”.

“Jeremy met with a specialist today, after having scans on Saturday. It is a bitter pill for him and us to swallow but in terms of certainty of outcome and the nature of the injury surgery is the recommended option,” Collingwood GM of Football, Geoff Walsh, said.

“It isn’t possible to be precise about how long Jeremy’s recovery might take but we know it is going to be a matter of months rather than weeks.

“As a highly popular figure and a leader we look forward to seeing him back. I know he is keen to remain involved with the team as he recovers, contributing all that he can.”

Howe maintained a positive outlook when he spoke to reporters on Saturday at Melbourne airport.

“There is plenty of time left in the season so I am not ruling it out,” Howe said of a return to action in 2020.

“I’m backing the boys and I will still play a role throughout the season, no doubt, and hopefully play a role at the business end.”
