Finals flop raises questions on De Goey’s value

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has lashed suggestions that out of contract Collingwood star Jordan De Goey could earn a million dollars a year on a new deal.

Speculation around De Goey’s future has reached fever pitch with the Magpies’ season officially coming to an end after a disappointing semi-final loss to Geelong.

While De Goey has shown his match-breaking abilities in games this season, he has once again blown hot and cold, held goalless against the Cats, and Cornes suggested that the performance was indicative of his true monetary value.

“There’s been talk for a couple of years that he’s a million-dollar player, he is nowhere near a million-dollar player,” he told Nine’s AFL Sunday Footy Show.

“Firstly, because of his inaccuracy in front of goal. Secondly, I think we speak far too much about a player who probably averages 1.8 goals per game.

“He’s a $600,000-$650,000 player for me.”

Cornes’ comments came after De Goey’s coach Nathan Buckley admitted that money was standing in the way of his star forward continuing his career in the black and white.

“Jordy loves the club and he wants to be here,” Buckley said after the Geelong loss.

“Elements of people on his side would like to see him remunerated as well as he possibly could and, you know, we want him to be rewarded appropriately as we do the other 44 blokes on our list for what they bring to the table.

“I think that’s what it comes down to because … it’s not for lack of belief in what the place has done for him, what it brings for him and the opportunity it provides and the love and care and connection to not only the club but in particular his teammates.

“But yes, there still needs to be a monetary outcome that is satisfactory for both parties.”

The 24-year-old is one of four key Magpies yet to re-sign along with Darcy Moore, Brody Mihocek and Josh Daicos, and has been linked with a move to Carlton in recent days.

While De Goey could yet walk out on the Magpies, veteran AFL reporter Damian Barrett urged fans to not read too much into the fact that he was yet to re-sign with the club.

“Historically when players of that nature and that standing and profile wait until the last game of their season before they determine their future, it says they’re leaving,” he told the Sunday Footy Show.

“This year is different because of what has happened with the list numbers being reduced and even as we speak the clubs not knowing how much money there is to apportion to each player.”
