Lynch’s classy act consoling shattered Power fan

Richmond’s Tom Lynch is seen as a bit of a villain among AFL fans who don’t follow the yellow and black, but after the Tigers defeated Port Adelaide he had a touching moment consoling a devastated young Power supporter.

As Lynch completed a post-game interview on the Adelaide Oval, he was caught on camera talking to and comforting a small boy clad in Port Adelaide fan gear.

Lynch spoke to the young fan, and gave him a thumbs up before getting a hug from his family.

In a low-scoring, tense game in wet conditions, the Power were defeated by just one goal in front of a massive home crowd at Adelaide Oval last night.

The defeat ends Port Adelaide’s season, and sees Richmond progress to their third AFL grand final in four years.

Lynch has been a controversial figure at the Tigers, having been involved in some on-field incidents which have outraged AFL fans and other players alike. This season Lynch has been cited by Match Review Officer Michael Christian five times.

On Friday night, he was mercilessly booed throughout the game by Port Adelaide fans.

“It’s all part of the theatre. That’s the reality,” Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said in his post-match press conference.

“Tom’s a big boy. He can handle it.

“He’s a wonderful player, one of the better players in the competition. It’s water off a duck’s back from Tom’s point of view. He plays a game, he plays it hard and I just love the way he goes about it.

“He’s had a tough year. Some of those [match review] incidents have been harshly judged. He’s been probably maligned a little bit for that. But he understands it, he accepts it and he gets on with it – that’s what we love about him.”
